The presentation begins with a former SS officer telling how SS leader Heinrich Himmler visited occupied territory in Russia, eager to see an execution team at work. At that time, SS troops were killing their unarmed prisoners with firing squads, taking such a perverse pleasure in their operations that they would pose for snapshots beside piles of bodies.
Enough photographs leaked out that recreational picture taking was banned, but the killing continued at such a rate that more efficient means than firing squads had to be implemented. This documentary shows blueprints that German industry developed for massive crematoria, noting the precise specifications that engineers provided for murder on an assembly line basis.
A chilling interview with a German railroad worker, who was forced to help manage the massive transit point beside the Auschwitz concentration camp, demonstrates how the Nazi killing machine coerced ordinary workers into participating. This film contains some very disturbing footage, but it is an intelligently produced look at a critical turning point in the history of the Holocaust. --Robert J. McNamara
